The WiTTIE Team

The WiTTIE Team is made up of a unique group of talented educators, researchers, and technologists.

Jennifer Kidd, Ph.D. -- Jenniferjkidd

Jennifer Kidd 8619.jpg Jennifer Kidd is the PI (Principal Investigator) for Project WiTTIE and a full time lecturer in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University (ODU), where she teaches Foundations and Assessment of Education and Classroom Research and Assessment. Past endeavors include teaching in Chicago and Newport News, VA directing Superkids, an international pre-school and kindergarten in Budapest, Hungary; coordinating a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to use Technology (PT3) grant; and serving as a graduate assistant in all sorts of capacities at Old Dominion University.

She earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (and, it's true, Bill Ayers was one of her favorite instructors), a Master's degree in Secondary Education, and a Ph.D. in Urban Services, both from ODU.

In her current life, she tries (mostly in vain) to prevent her 7-year-old son from watching YouTube videos of roller coasters all day, dresses up in princess clothes with her four-year-old daughter (who wears the queen's garb-- of course), plays a mean game of peek-a-boo with spoonfuls of babyfood, and does most of her work between 11 and 3am. You can see the monsters in action in Donovan's Roller Coaster Story in the sample content. Once a week, she catches an hour of yoga, and once or twice a year she sneaks off to the movie theater.

Her research interests include time expansion and sleep deprivation.

Peter Baker, M.S.Ed. -- Pbaker

Peter Baker earned a BA from the College of William and Mary in 2005, a MS from Old Dominion University in 2007 and is currently a PhD Candidate in Old Dominion University’s Darden College of Education. Mr. Baker served as lead graduate assistant and member of the original planning team responsible for the design, implementation and study of the student-written textbooks utilized at Old Dominion University since 2006. Currently, Mr. Baker serves as graduate teaching assistant in ODU’s Darden College of Education and graduate research assistant in ODU’s Program for the Research and Evaluation of Public Schools.

Cady Pinell, B.S. -- CadyPinell

Cady Pinell is a graduate assistant working on the WiTTIE project. She is currently in the PreK–6 Elementary Education Master’s program at Old Dominion University. She received a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech in 2004. She has worked as a research assistant on multiple projects and has most recently taught PreK. Her hobbies include traveling, which is great since her husband is in the Navy, playing frisbee with her dog, and watching movies. She hopes that the WiTTIE project will help teachers integrate Wikis into their classroom in fun and creative ways and also hopes to use them in her own classroom in the future.

Andrew Whitworth, M.S. -- Whiteknight

Andrew Whitworth is a software engineer from Philadelphia PA. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Temple University, and currently works in West Chester PA developing software systems for GPS-enabled rail tracking devices. Andrew is the lead software designer for the WiTTIE project. He has been an active member of the Wikibooks projects for several years, and is an active internals developer on the Parrot Virtual Machine open source software project. Andrew's interests include software design and development, programming language design, and engineering education.

Patrick O'Shea, Ph.D. -- pmo200g

Dr. Patrick O'Shea is the Director of the Handheld Augmented Reality Project at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. This project is focused on studying the potential of GPS-enabled handheld computing in educational settings to improve academic and non-academic outcomes. In addition, Dr. O'Shea has more than 15 years of experience working at every level of education, working in online and face-to-face settings teaching educational technology, assessment and evaluation, the social and cultural foundations of education, and action research (among other topics). Among his accomplishments, Dr. O'Shea has consulted internationally for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, built online testing protocols, designed, implemented, and evaluated large-scale university-level projects, and has extensive experience with practical applications of technology in the educational setting.

Dwight Allen, Ed.D.

Dwight W. Allen is Emeritus Eminent Scholar of Educational Reform at Old Dominion University. As Stanford University’s director of teacher education he became known for his successful advocacy of educational reform incorporating extensive use of technology. As Dean of Education at the University of Massachusetts, he organized programs and reforms combating institutional racism. At Old Dominion University he was the principal investigator for a $1.3 million grant to improve the technology training of teachers. He was the founding coordinator of NewPAGE, ODU’s environmental education class required for more than 2000 freshmen for four years. For 16 years he worked with the World Bank and The United Nations Development Program as chief technical advisor and international advisor for the largest UNDP education programs in China. For the past two years he has consulted with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help devise strategies to bring better information to Smallholder farmers in South Asia and Africa.
