Introduction

This page includes a step-by-step guide to participating in the In Our World project. This guide is meant to help you and your class get started with the project.

Should you encounter any problems or have any questions as you go through the steps listed below, please contact the WiTTIE Team at WiTTIEsupport@gmail.com. You may also contact Project Coordinators Peter Baker (Pbaker) or Cady Pinell (CadyPinell) on their user pages.

Step 1

Teachers, create a user account. Then, send us an email (WiTTIEsupport@gmail.com) telling us your username so that we can upgrade your account to "Teacher" status. This will ensure that you are able to add students to your class group (explained later).

Step 2a

Start learning about the WiTTIE Wiki interface by creating your user page. At this point, you may want to refer to some of the other tutorials, such as Upload/Insert an Image, Textboxes, and Fonts and Colors.

Step 2b

Start looking around the two chapters of In Our World:  Community Portraits and Share Your Perspective.  Begin brainstorming ideas for how you want your class to participate, projects you might want them to do, etc.  Note:  The Community Portraits section has provided a structure and directions for you, however you may chose to structure your pages differently.  This is just a suggestion/guideline.

Step 3

Find out your school's policy on students posting content on the Internet. Many school districts require signed consent forms. Please feel free to adapt our sample consent letter to meet your needs.

Step 4

Review our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use so that you can explain these policies to your students when they begin the project.

Step 5

Add your username to the Participating Teachers page.  You may view the tutorial Add Username to a Page for help.

Step 6

Create a link on your user page to your class's Community Portraits page.  You may view the tutorial Linking to WiTTIE Pages for help.

Step 7

Have students create a user account.

Step 8

Have students create a user page.

Step 9

Teachers, collect all student usernames.  Add students to your school's class group.
