Sample Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

This year, our class is participating in a project called WiTTIE (Wiki Templates Transforming Instructional Environments) designed by teachers and researchers at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.  During this project, we will collaborate on the development of an online book in which we will share information about our local community with other students around the world.  Your child will help to create content for this book.  This content will be visible to anyone in the world.  Here's where you can find the site where the book will be written:  http://www.wittieproject.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page.

Before the project begins, we will discuss what is and is not safe to post and access on the Internet.  I would like to invite you to talk with your child about this important topic, as well.  You should also feel free to review the content your child posts.

This will be the WiTTIE Project’s first year, so the developers will be making improvements based on your child’s and my feedback.  In order to make these changes, the work we produce will be reviewed, and our class may be asked to participate in surveys.  However, no personally identifying information about your child will ever be used.

Remember, your child is not required to participate in the WiTTIE Project and will not be penalized if you choose to opt out.  However, your child’s participation is important to the project's success, and we sincerely hope you will allow your child to be a part of this project.  Please complete and sign the enclosed “Parent Informed Consent Form” and return it to me as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or the WiTTIE Team (WiTTIEsupport@gmail.com) anytime.  Thank you for your time and consideration!
